Almost Gone

Incorporated in 1923, Longwood has its roots in the citrus industry.  The Great Freezes of 1894 and 1895 nearly wiped Longwood off the map as the citrus industry was devastated. By the 1900 census the population had dropped to a mere 325 people.

Conveniently located at the crossroads of Interstate 4 and State Road 434, Longwood has become a desirable quaint bedroom community for Orlando with a population of 13,529 (2006 census).  There are a number of beautiful parks, playgrounds, extensive bike trails, and lakes for residents and visitors to enjoy.  The heart of its scenic park system is the Wekiva River. One of the most protected river systems in Florida, the Wekiva River is pristine and much of it looks the way it did in the 1800s and hosts a great variety of wildlife including numerous bird species, turtles, alligators and Manatees.  The river is a popular spot for canoeing and kayaking and feeds into the St. John’s River – the longest river in Florida.
