The County Seat

Founded in 1882 by Henry DeLand, a successful baking soda merchant from New York, the city of DeLand is now the county seat of  Volusia County with a population of 24,375 (2006 Census).

The downtown area known as the Downtown DeLand Historic District has a number of beautifully restored 19^th century buildings.   Adjacent to this district is the Garden District which was originally developed in the early 1900’s.  After WWII ended, the area saw a marked decline as other areas of Florida became more attractive and by the 1980s the area had become blighted with nearly every property in some sort of disrepair. 

Rebuilt and Renovated

In 2001, an artist and urban designer from California bought 27 run-down and dilapidated properties and renamed the area The Historic Garden District.  In the following years, 32 homes and businesses have been restored or rebuilt and these properties have become the core of the area’s renovation – a process which continues to today.  Check out the DeLand homes below or to the left refine the search for your DeLand home or investment !

DeLand is also home to the small private university of Stetson University, which founded the first law school in Florida in 1900. It is also home to a branch of Daytona State College and The Museum of Florida Art.  

The area is served by five elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school as well as a major hospital and medical facility.

It is 40 minutes from downtown Orlando and 25 minutes from downtown Daytona Beach.
